Overview
This course introduces the fundamentals of ArcGIS, the industry’s leading GIS software tool, through a structured sequence of topics. It begins with an overview of the evolution of GIS, tracing its development from paper maps to modern, globally integrated digital systems. It also covers the installation of ArcGIS and demonstrates how to use online help resources to address technical questions.
The course then focuses on exploring data within ArcGIS using ArcMap, introducing core GIS concepts, basic data analysis techniques, and the creation of an initial map.
Further sections guide the development of more advanced mapping skills, including symbolizing data and producing visually effective map outputs.
The course concludes with methods for sharing maps and data, as well as best practices for organizing and storing geospatial data.
The Fundamentals of GIS course offered by Coursera in partnership with UC Davis can be taken as a standalone course or as part of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialization. Completion of this introductory course provides the foundational skills required to progress successfully through the full program.
Students requiring access to ArcGIS receive a non-commercial, one-year student license for participation in the course and specialization.
