About

This Fundamentals of Graphic Design course offered by Coursera in partnership with Calarts, will teach you the fundamental principles of graphic design: imagemaking, typography, composition, working with color and shape.

Overview

Graphic design is present in everyday life. Words and images—the core elements of graphic design—carry most of the content in both digital and printed environments. As graphic design becomes increasingly visible and widespread, its importance within culture continues to grow.

Key facts

By the end of the Fundamentals of Graphic Design course offered by Coursera in partnership with CalArts, learners develop the ability to explore and investigate visual representation through various image-making techniques; understand foundational principles of working with shape, color, and pattern; gain exposure to the language and skills of typography; and apply the principles of composition and visual contrast. Completion of the course, along with its optional (but highly recommended) briefs, results in a core set of graphic design skills applicable to personal projects or further specialized study.

Access to and a beginner-level understanding of Adobe Creative Suite programs, such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, is beneficial, particularly for completing the optional briefs.
