Overview
The programme
- Founded by the Romans, controlled by the Spanish, besieged by the French, and occupied by the Germans, the picturesque city of Maastricht personifies how Europe’s history has served as a prologue to the present.
- At the crossroads of three borders and cultures, it is the perfect setting for students to examine socio-economic, cultural, environmental and political perspectives and consider how they shape debates about human behaviour, shared values and belonging in today’s Europe.
- The Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe programme is offered at the Maastricht University - Center for European Studies.
Accreditation
Students are directly enrolled at Maastricht University (UM). They can take classes at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) - awarded the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for outstanding education and research on European integration, the Center for European Studies (CES) and the highly selective Liberal Arts and Sciences programme at University College Maastricht (UCM).
Programme Structure
Each CES semester is 18 weeks long and starts with an extensive 2-week introduction, followed by two ‘block periods’ of classes (block periods 1 and 2 in Fall; block periods 4 and 5 in Spring). Students take two courses per 8-week block period, with the option of adding a language course or skills training. Students can earn a min. of 24 and max. of 32 ECTS per semester. The number of hours in class varies from 12-15 hours per week; for every hour in class students are expected to spend 2-3 hours on study.
Courses
Students can choose from more than 400 bachelor-level courses taught in English at UM. At least half the courses should be selected from programme-related majors. This combination provides a solid understanding of the central subject while giving students the freedom to build their own curriculum. Please refer to the CES website for a complete overview.
