About

In this summer school course at Aarhus University, we dive into the connection between Modernity, Knowledge and Social Pathology.

Overview

About the course

In this Modernity, Knowledge and Social Pathology summer course at Aarhus University we will engage in debates about crucial issues like fake news, radicalization, and the knowledge crisis.

We're faced with questions: Can knowledge be a solution to our societal problems, or does it somehow contribute to them? Is there really a knowledge crisis, and if so, how do universities respond? We'll explore different viewpoints, mainly critical theory and functional approaches, to gain a comprehensive understanding.

Programme Structure

What you will learn:

  • The first theme is the functionalist perspective, which sees society as a system with parts that work together. We'll focus on the ideas of three thinkers: Emile Durkheim, Ernst Cassirer, and Zygmunt Bauman, to shed light on the connection between knowledge and social issues.
  • The second significant perspective is critical theory. In the second part of the course, we delve into societal and technical progress by presenting the concept of social pathologies. We'll lean on the theories of Th. W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and Axel Honneth.
  • Putting these perspectives into practice, we'll explore real-world topics like radicalization, populism, and Nazism. By analyzing these cases, we'll study how knowledge is twisted and shaped by extreme ideologies and populist movements within the context of modernity and social problems.
