The only one of its kind in the world, this clinical coded data and develop strategies to implement audit outcomes with this Clinical Coding Auditing course at La Trobe University.

This five-month online course is designed to enhance your skills in auditing coded data and analysing, reporting, and acting on audit outcomes. You must have a qualification in health information management or clinical coding and extensive clinical coding experience.

You will work through the course material in a systematic way within a specified timeframe. Assessment will be by one major assignment and a final examination, plus an ICD-10-AM health classification examination.

Programme Structure

There are four modules in the course:
  • Module 1 - Principles of Casemix and Activity Based Funding Models
  • Module 2 - Theory and Principles of Auditing
  • Module 3 - Statistical Analysis and Methodology
  • Module 4 - Audit Outcomes: Reporting and Strategic Development

General requirements

The course is open to:

  • those who hold a qualification (Bachelor or Master) in health information management from HIMAA accredited tertiary courses
  • HIMAA Certificate IV in Clinical Classification graduates or equivalent
  • Certificate IV clinical coders who have completed an approved RTO (VET) clinical coding course

Minimum three years' experience coding in a tertiary hospital, complex case-mix; five years' experience coding at other non-tertiary hospital, less complex case-mix

  • A professional reference from current manager (e.g. HIS Manager)
  • Currently working at a Health Information Service and/or have access to medical records
  • Australian and NZ applicants must be conversant with ICD-10-AM (11th edition)
  • International Students must be conversant with ICD-10-AM (minimum of 6th edition)
