Overview
About the course
Have you ever questioned why at times when we try on an item of clothing in a store or boutique we can often find that doesn't always fit us the way we'd like it to?
Examples of this could be: a need to amend lengths or widths of arms, legs, waist or hip areas because certain sections of garments may be too small or too big given our natural body proportions. And let's face it, you don't need to be a high fashion guru to know that in reality many of us are not built to fit into what industry’s determined statistics are of ‘standard measurements'.
On this Made to Measure Womenswear course at the University of the Arts London (UAL) you will discover a style you feel works well for you and complements your unique shape. Once you understand these principles you can begin to consider applying these skills/techniques to produce further apparel for yourselves or others.
Programme Structure
Topics covered:- You will learn how to draft a basic skirt or trouser block from your recorded personal body measurements. This will serve as a simple template which you'll be able to modify into other designs and shapes.
- Particular emphasis will be put on learning how to achieve a good fit and what to analyse when doing this. To achieve this we will work through the stages of constructing a toile to a finished garment in a fabric of your choice.
- There will also be an opportunity to visit some fabric shops where you will be able to discuss and select suitable fabrics, trims and fastenings for your design.
- Some essential sewing techniques will be covered using industrial sewing machines including, appropriate seams, finishings, zip insertions and other simple fastenings.
- The bodice will also be discussed.
