About

This Introduction to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) for Creatives, Collectors and the Curious course at Singapore Management University arms participants with context and knowledge to understand NFTs; and to evaluate whether and how they want to be exposed to NFTs.

Overview

About the course

  • What makes Non-Fungible Tokens valuable and desirable? Why did Justin Bieber pay nearly US$1.8m on digital images of 2 Bored Apes when anyone can simply ‘right click, save’ them for free?
  • To answer these questions and make sense of the NFT phenomenon, this Introduction to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) for Creatives, Collectors and the Curious course at Singapore Management University delves into concepts of fungibility and non-fungibility, digital and token ownership, and the significance of value and status.
  • As a new and emerging asset class, NFTs are also fraught with risks which we shall examine. Paul Graham, venture capitalist of Y-Combinator fame, tweeted “you’re inviting history to make a fool of you if you dismiss NFTs”.

Programme Structure

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Explore the spectrum of fungibility and non-fungibility, and what makes NFTs valuable and desirable
  • Learn what is under the hood of owning an NFT: what the “token” is; where the art/digital assets are stored and their implications
  • Examine the different categories of NFTs and their utility
  • Overview of the NFT ecosystem from both the Creatives’ and Collectors’ point of view
  • Learn how to research and assess an NFT project
  • Be aware of NFT issues and risks and how to protect yourself
  • What factors should you consider as a Collector and Creator
  • Developments and the future of NFTs
