The Open University UK's Online counselling - getting started course has been designed to align to the BACP Online and Phone Therapy competency framework and relevant SCOPeD competencies. It has been developed with the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB).

The Open University UK's Online counselling - getting started course aims to equip counsellors with the ability to set up remote working via video-platform and/or phone, including managing issues related to technology, data protection and contracting. Once set up the course shows how to work ethically, which will include judging clients’ suitability for online working and managing boundaries online; how to work safely, such as with clients presenting at risk; and how to appropriately consider EDI issues.

Programme Structure

Courses include:

  • Setting up online counselling focuses on both technological options and aspects as well as legal context, in particular related to data security, that need consideration when setting up remote counselling.
  • Working ethically in video and phone counselling introduces you to the unique ethical considerations and challenges practitioners need to be aware of and navigate when working via video-link and phone.
  • Working safely in video and phone counselling you'll learn about assessment in video/phone counselling, with a specific focus on risk assessment and management.
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in video and phone counselling focuses on the importance of counsellors and psychotherapists working to foster equality, diversity and inclusion in remote practice.
