Course Objectives

Knowledge and understanding

  • Upon completion, the student of the AI-Ethics for Engineers course offered by Örebro University will be familiar with fundamentals of ethics and how they influence the development of AI systems. The student shall be able to analyze and discuss the ethical implications of AI systems, and reflect on the impact of his or her own development process.

Applied Knowledge and Skills

  • Upon completion, the student will be able to take practical actions to ensure the development of responsible and ethical AI systems and formulate informed recommendations and assessments in their professional area.

Making judgements and attitudes

  • Upon completion, the student will be able to apply informed and critical reasoning on his or her own development process in order to detect and identify ethical issues before, during, and after the development of an AI system, and address these issues with the appropriate response.

Programme Structure

The program focuses on:

  • Codes of conduct for engineers and basics of normative ethics
  • Cognitive bias and their influence on the design of AI systems
  • Model robustness, reliability and reproducability
  • Privacy and digital rights
  • The ART principles (Accountability, Responsibility, Transparency) and their application, and
  • Ethics applied to robotics.
