About

The Teaching Tourism course offered by Hokkaido University aims not only to engage participants in the subject matter but also help them cultivate their own teaching, with an understanding of the subject's complexity and interconnectivity and to help their students become global citizens that lead lives of consequence.

Overview

What you will study

  • The Teaching Tourism summer course offered by Hokkaido University is a hands-on seminar and workshop based course aimed at equipping learners with solid theoretical foundations about values-based learning, and also practical ideas of how to convert the theory into engaging learning experiences.
  • The course acts at several layers simultaneously; it is an analysis of a teaching philosophy, it is an examination of glocal challenges that need to shape future tourism curricula, and it builds skills by increasing participants' awareness of how values-based education can create positive actions that help diverse learners transform their future realities and physical communities.
  • By focusing on a broad range of values and worldviews, it will also help raise the critical consciousness of participants, understand and challenge the traditional neoliberal approach to teaching the subject matter, and provide them with a practical toolkit to implement their learnings.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain why values are integral components of all learning and teaching
  • Demonstrate how holistic values can be integrated in all training and teaching programs
  • Evaluate suitable teaching strategies leading to transformative learning experiences
  • Critically analyse the development of a values-based tourism syllabus and curriculum
  • Present a personally tailored values-based teaching program (seminar, course syllabus, portfolio)
