The Focus Assessed Transthoracic Echocardiography (FATE) course offered by the University of Cape Town is an internationally recognised point-of-care cardiac ultrasound workshop, designed to provide basic echocardiographic skills for physicians.

Key facts

In addition to the hands-on training session, participants of the Focus Assessed Transthoracic Echocardiography course offered by the University of Cape Town will be required to complete an e-learning component.

The e-learning covers introduction, physics of ultrasound, equipment and skills, basic imaging views, M-mode, cardiac function and pathology. It must be completed prior to the hands-on training in order to ensure maximum benefit for the workshop.

  • This course is aimed at doctors from all specialities e.g.: Anaesthesiologists, intensivists, emergency physicians, internal medicine physicians and surgeons requiring time-sensitive information regarding patient care. 
  • This includes interns and medical officers; i.e. any physician who encounters haemodynamically unstable patients on a regular basis.
