Overview
The ‘what’ elements of the Environmental Risk Assessment and Management short course offered by North-West University (NWU) are taken directly from ISO 31000:2018 and presented as theoretical modules. These theoretical guidelines are, however, no more than a succinct definition of ‘what’ is required from any risk assessment and management programme.
Overview
The ‘how’ to implement the ‘what’ is explained in detail by means of demonstrations and resource kits. The demonstrations and resource kits are based on CEM’s extensive experience in environmental risk assessment and management, while they are also informed by HB 436:2004 and IEC/ISO 31010L: 2009.
The application of concepts learned and the mastering of tools and techniques is achieved by means of a structured practical programme that simulates a complete risk assessment based on the ISO 31000 model.
Participants are assessed by means of structured plenary feedback of all the practical exercises, as well as a formal examination on the last day of the course. The general approach adopted is to use qualitative approaches, tools and techniques to conduct environmental risk assessments in a responsible and defensible way. This short course is focused on environmental risk assessment and management. The core theory underpinning environmental risk assessment and the approach to the instrument may, however, be readily adapted to be applied.
