What you will learn
- The participants of the Multilingual Pedagogies in Higher Education course offered by North-West University (NWU) should be able to demonstrate an awareness of and a sensitivity to multilingualism in Higher Education contexts in order to foster mutual respect among speakers of different languages, encourage an ethic of care, further a culture of social justice, and embrace diversity in language usage and language classrooms.
- The participants should demonstrate knowledge and skilful implementation of a number of practical and useful strategies that may be utilised to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in a multilingual classroom in a Higher Education context.
- The participants should demonstrate the skill of returning to the medium of instruction and consolidating students’ understanding.
- The participants should be able to demonstrate an informed understanding of the strategies for the promotion of multilingual teaching and plan and manage an implementation process within a well-defined, familiar and supported environment.
- The participants should demonstrate a detailed understanding of lecturing through the medium of a second language, skills to evaluate, select and apply appropriate multilingual pedagogies within a familiar context, the ability to identify and analyse problems with regard to multilingual classrooms and identify possible solutions to these problems
Programme Structure
The program focuses on:- Raise awareness of multilingual pedagogies among lecturers from different faculties in Higher Education;
- Provide the theoretical foundations of multilingual pedagogies;
- Discuss possibilities for using multilingual pedagogies as transformative tools in Higher Education;
- Demonstrate, discuss and apply useful strategies for lecturing in multilingual classrooms;
- Plan effective lectures for first-year modules to promote functional multilingualism in Higher Education contexts.
