The purpose of the Deep water Metocean Training-METOCEAN PETRONAS - EOF, Wave Spectral and Monte Carlo course offered by University Teknologi PETRONAS is to develop training modules deliverable to METOCEAN Unit based in the area of Wave Spectral, EOF, and Monte Carlo application.

What you will study

Given that the audience are practicing engineers, the main focus of the Deep water Metocean Training-METOCEAN PETRONAS - EOF, Wave Spectral and Monte Carlo course offered by University Teknologi PETRONAS will be on practical implementation, ie, hands-on implementation.

Given the direction offshore industry is headed with lower probabilities of exceedance defined for both old and new structures, defining metocean conditions require more advanced analysis, namely, combining EOF, spectral shapes and Monte Carlo simulation. All of these advanced simulations require a programming environment, hence, the first part will focus on the analysis of data using MATLAB. This will be followed by mathematical background of all the topics and the implementation of the techniques in MATLAB.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • To use MATLAB for field data analysis
  • Derive extreme current profiles using EOF
  • Derive spectrum and perform Monte-Carlo simulation for deriving long term statistics

  • Deriving time histories from files
  • Correcting for tides and platform location in time histories
  • Applying quality control on measured time histories
  • Empirical Orthogonal Function for current profile prediction
  • Background of EOF and SVD
  • Principal Component Analysis
  • Inverse first order reliability method
  • Singular Value Decomposition Application of EOF/SVD for current profiles
  • Spectral analysis and Monte-Carlo simulation
  • Wave model spectral Typical spectra in SCS
  • Deriving storm spectra from field data
  • Monte-Carlo simulation for estimating long term statistics
