Overview
What you will study
The Queer Theologies course offered by University of Oxford will discuss if there are aims in queer theologies and, if so, what they might be. Of course, one very visible aim is to deconstruct spirituality, sacred texts and beliefs in order to show the relationality of the Divine with all people in different contexts, genders and sexualities. Queer theologies aim to bring these voices and experiences into the creation of theologies. Experience is central in queer theologies as it has been in all liberation theologies.
The day will focus on Christian theology while acknowledging that queer theologies are developing in all major religions. Despite this Christian focus, it will not be only Western focused, and we will also take a look at queer theologies emerging in the global south. During the day, we will look at queer readings of the bible, queering ethics as well as doctrines such as Christology, which are central to the Christian faith and have acted as barriers for so many in the sexual and gender margins. Broadening our exploration to the global south will further demonstrate how queer theory/theology does not work within already accepted boundaries and, of course, opens the debate further.
