Overview
What you will study
The MeToo and the Artworld event offered by University of Oxford will explore facets of society that mythologize and support notions of artistic genius that uphold misogyny and abuses of power. We will look at artworks that demonstrate gender imbalance through to those that protest this, from the Renaissance to today. These include canonical examples of the ‘male gaze’ through to Allen Jones’ Chair (1969); the ongoing work of the Guerrilla Girls and Sulkowicz’ Mattress Performance (2014-5); biopics that mythologise artists; art market practices that uphold sexism.
Are there other ways of authoring art that deconstructs a biographical reading? How have curators sought to tell a more 'truthful' picture of its artistic canon?
