Overview
What you will study
What is capitalism and should we be looking to reform, or even replace, it?
What is capitalism and how does it work? We can contrast it with rival systems such as feudalism and socialism. But there are different varieties of capitalism as well, extending markets to different areas of life and society.
Discussions in The Ethics of Capitalism course offered by University of Oxford will be framed around contemporary issues including environmental damage, low-paid labour, overwork and consumption, whether things like human kidneys should be for sale, and whether capitalism fails women.
By the end of this course, students will be expected to understand:
- The nature and workings of capitalism
- Criticisms of capitalism
- The alternatives to capitalism
- The ethical arguments about capitalism
- The relationship between normative and empirical arguments about economic policy
