Overview
What you will study
Companies are deploying AI-enabled robots in factories, warehouses, and many other settings. Advancements in social robotics are opening the door to robot companions and caregivers in homes. Robotic implants and assistive devices are transforming the capabilities of human beings themselves.
The Artificial Intelligence Ethics - Roboethics course offered by Athabasca University will consider the following questions:
- What happens when robots take on tasks that have traditionally been performed by human workers and caregivers?
- Are there limits to what robotic systems and applications can do?
- What role do companies and other stakeholders have to play in ensuring that robots are designed, built, sold, and used responsibly?
- Have you considered the social and ethical ramifications of outsourcing work and other activities to robots?
- Have you developed the knowledge and skills needed to identify and manage the potential risks?
Programme Structure
The program focuses on:
- Learn about the applications and limits of classical and autonomous robots.
- Explore ethical issues associated with the development and use of robotic systems.
- Examine the effects of robot-enabled automation in the workforce and other contexts.
- Consider how design choices shape people’s interactions with robots and other human beings.
- Find strategies for promoting autonomy and well-being, improving transparency and accountability, and mitigating the potential risks of systems or projects that involve robots.
