Overview
What you will study
Therapy continues to evolve in multiple directions. There are constantly new medications being approved for chronic hepatitis C and inflammatory bowel disease. The line is also blurring between the traditional realms of endoscopy and surgery. We are now seeing novel endoscopic approaches to Barrett’s esophagus as well as endoscopic based treatment for GI stromal tumors. To maintain their practices, gastroenterologists and surgeons need to stay up to date on a wide range of topics including forming a differential diagnosis for a solitary liver mass, understanding the indications for cholangioscopy, becoming familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of immune check point inhibitor colitis, and engaging the best approach for treating a patient with a foreign body impaction; yet formal education in these areas is limited. It is difficult for practicing physicians and surgeons to stay abreast of these new advances. The Annual Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology course offered by Johns Hopkins University will help with that.
