UCL's The Professional Surgical First Assistant course is designed to help registered healthcare practitioners acquire the necessary skills for the role of a Surgical First Assistant (SFA).

General requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold active registration with the NMC as a nurse or equivalent healthcare professional (HCPC).
  • Maintain current employment in the operating theatres, with support from their manager or an agreed placement.
  • Secure a local named consultant surgeon mentor who will serve as the primary supervisor, potentially with support from other designated supervisors such as SpRs or qualified SCPs.
  • Establish local arrangements for regular meetings between the student and consultant mentor to discuss progress and customize work-based learning opportunities.

All applicants must be able to present a valid proof of identity and right to study in the UK.
