The module is delivered through a series of lectures and workshops and the main aim is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to be able to identify, assess and manage individuals with memory/cognitive problems, dementia including referral pathways. It is expected that by the end of this course you will be able to assess the needs of a patient, including planning, implementing, and evaluating the care they receive.
- It is extremely important for those working within the field of dementia care to be enabled to study at the academic level of Module MHR 3632/MHR 4632, so that the work undertaken with clients, carers and families is recognised not only for its therapeutic value but also for its academic merit.
Programme Structure
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:- Discriminate multidisciplinary perspectives about dementia and critically evaluate therapeutic approaches to person-centred dementia care from diagnosis to end of life and demonstrate critical knowledge of assessment and diagnosis of dementia;
- Appraise the central role of communication in interpreting an individual’s needs particularly in relation to actively develop, implement and defend strategies in responding effectively to the needs of people whose behaviour is challenging;
- Critically appraise a range of ethical and legal issues impacting on people with dementia and their families, and summarise up to date knowledge of relevant legal frameworks and be able to advocate for referral to an appropriate agency/professional as necessary.
