- The aim of this course in Dementia Awareness Training at Middlesex University is to offer sessions which upskill/ update practitioners on specific primary/ community/inpatient care-related topics. Sessions cover a wide range of clinical, practice and professional issues
- Research has shown that the end of life care needs of patients with dementia and their families, are poorly understood and poorly addressed.
Programme Structure
By the end of the session, participants should be able to:- Exhibit a greater understanding of dementia, its prevalence and its impact upon individuals;
- Consider the assessment skills required and state how physical health difficulties may exacerbate or mimic symptoms of dementia (focus on depression);
- Engage in reflective evaluation of caring interventions;
- Describe a person-centred approach to care including the RCN SPACE tool, the ‘forget me not’ scheme and butterfly approach;
- Explain evidence-based interventions particularly in relation to managing the environment;
- Describe a more expansive use of communication skills when interacting and understanding the needs of people with dementia;
- Recognise the role of the carer/family, their needs and the support networks;
- State national policy drivers and the effect of these on practice.
