The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.
- This workshop in Deteriorating Patient in Mental Health Settings at Middlesex University develops the learners’ knowledge and skills to identify the deteriorating patient. It assumes that participants already perform vital signs assessments, but each skill is refreshed.
Programme Structure
By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- Discuss personal effectiveness in gathering measurements and information about a patient’s physical state of health.
- Apply one or more named tools for monitoring changes in physical health status to demonstrate an awareness of the cues used to detect patient deterioration, including A-G assessment. This will include ACVPU and using the National Early Warning Score (NEWS2) and SBAR for a variety of scenarios as well as NICE and Royal College guidance.
- Describe and manage a variety of patient deterioration scenarios safely and effectively.
- Prioritise a workload and escalate in a safe manner.
- explore understanding of individual responsibility and limitations in relation to monitoring the changing physical health status of a patient.
