About

Develop the knowledge and skills to support women, families, midwives and healthcare teams in delivering high quality maternity care in our short course in Maternity Support Workers at Middlesex University for practicing support workers.

Overview

Why study the Maternity Support Workers at Middlesex University?

  • This course is designed to enhance your ability to assist maternity teams in providing safe and holistic care to women and families.
  • Taught by experienced practitioners at our state-of-the-art London campus, you will explore the maternal, fetal and neonatal physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, labour and puerperium, with particular focus on the principles of accountability, including the role boundaries in maternity services.
  • Delivered through weekly study days to enable you to maintain your employment while advancing your learning, this course will challenge you to develop and apply your knowledge of basic adult and neonatal anatomy and physiology, and to develop care plans under the supervision of a midwife.
  • Throughout the course we will ensure that you do not undertake care that falls within the remit of the midwife and instead focus on developing the key support skills that will enhance your current practice, such as taking blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration.
  • Armed with these enhanced skills you will become more effective in your current practice and obtain an excellent base knowledge for pursuing further academic study in Midwifery if you wish.
