Course content
  • The session will incorporate best practice from documents such as NICE Clinical Guideline 123 Common mental health problems: identification and pathways to care (2011), No Health without Mental Health (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2009), and Parity of esteem (Mental Health Foundation).
  • Study mode: Synchronous online delivery via virtual classroom using one of the following web-based learning and teaching platforms (e.g. MS teams, Kaltura new row, Adobe Connect, Zoom).  The content on the day will be delivered via a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, small group exercise and discussion, group feedback and recap/quiz.

Programme Structure

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
  • Identify the links between mental and physical health;
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of some common mental health diagnoses;
  • Recognise when someone (including adolescents) is in mental health crisis;
  • How to respond appropriately and provide comfort to someone in a mental health crisis;
  • Discuss options for services, help and support for someone with mental health difficulties;
  • Recognise the role of the carers/family/ supporters and their needs.
