About

This General Chemistry - Concept Development and Application course offered by Coursera in partnership with Rice University will cover the topics of a full year, two semester General Chemistry course.

Overview

The fundamental concepts in the General Chemistry - Concept Development and Application course offered by Coursera in partnership with Rice University will be introduced via the Concept Development Approach developed at Rice University.

The fundamental concepts in the General Chemistry – Concept Development and Application course offered by Coursera in partnership with Rice University are introduced using the Concept Development Approach developed at Rice University.

This approach develops key concepts through experimental observations and scientific reasoning, rather than presenting concepts for memorization or direct application.

Why use this approach?

One reason is that many learners are inductive learners, meaning they prefer to make specific observations and then generalize from them. Many important concepts in chemistry are counterintuitive, and understanding their origins makes them easier to accept, explain, and apply.

A second reason is that scientific reasoning in general, and chemical reasoning in particular, relies on inductive processes. The Concept Development Approach illustrates these reasoning methods clearly.

A third reason is that this approach is more engaging. The structure and reactions of matter are presented as puzzles solved through observation and reasoning, making the learning experience intellectually stimulating rather than simply revealing answers upfront.
