Overview

The  Professional Certificate in Essential Practices for Electrical Safety, Earthing, and Lightning Protection  from  Engineering Institute of Technology  provides students with a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the design and analysis of electrical safety and earthing systems. Additionally, students will gain in-depth knowledge of advanced protection schemes against lightning.

Upon completion, students should be able to:

  • Explain electrical system earthing and protective earthing.
  • Research and explain the procedure for designing an appropriate earthing system for electrical substations, as well as measuring earth resistance and earth fault loop resistance.
  • Explain the need for lightning protection of buildings and electrical facilities and describe the basic approach for evaluating protection effectiveness.
  • Describe how to design a comprehensive lightning and surge protection system for a building and evaluate its effectiveness.
  • Identify electrical safety hazards in various environments and plan appropriate risk prevention and control measures.
  • Discuss electrical safety legislation applicable in Australia and its impact on the design and operation of electrical systems.
  • These outcomes will be assessed through four assignments and participation, which are mapped to the outcomes.
