Overview
Stretching from bench to bedside, the course enables students to understand the relationship between anatomical structures and systems and different neurological disorders.
Key Facts
The Clinical Neuroanatomy programme from VU Amsterdam Summer School will focus on the central nervous system from different viewpoints. As a part of each lecture, small groups of students will prepare case presentations with regard to the lecture’s subject. These case presentations will be discussed with the group, directly after which an anatomy practical will be given that focuses on the subject of the case.
The course covers bench to bedside: students will obtain hands-on in-depth knowledge of the anatomy of the brain on a structural, functional and systemic level, and will be able to relate this knowledge directly to specific symptoms in patients.

Courses include:
- You will be able to name different areas within different brain regions and their function, as well as the cranial nerves, when shown a brain or image thereof
- You will understand connectivity patterns of the various known neuroanatomical systems
- You will be able to deduct possible neuroanatomical damage when presented with clinical symptoms of a (hypothetical) patient
- You will be able to logically infer symptoms following brain damage, on the basis of you understanding of the structure and function of the brain
- You will obtain a mental 3D image of the brain, through which you will be able to relate different anatomical structures and their functioning to each other.

General requirements
- The course is aimed at Master's / PhD students and will provide participants with the insight to deduct that all neurological conditions and neuroscientific principles can be traced back to anatomy. Hence, decent understanding of neuroanatomy forms a pivotal starting point for any scientific or clinical career in the (pre)clinical and fundamental neurosciences.
- The course will also be insightful for practitioners working in e.g. neuro-rehabilitation as it provides them with examples of the injuries they are dealing with in their practices. Furthermore, it will be interesting for physical therapists, paramedics, and teachers in e.g. biology at high school or universities of applied sciences.
