Overview
Water electrolysis converts electrical energy into hydrogen and oxygen by splitting water molecules. Low-temperature water electrolysis is a crucial technology for a renewable energy economy, enabling efficient storage of electricity from renewable sources in the form of high-purity hydrogen.
Alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis combines the advantages of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis and traditional liquid-electrolyte-based electrolysis. Key benefits include the potential use of PGM-free catalysts with low cost, operation with pure water or low-concentration alkaline solutions instead of concentrated alkaline electrolytes, and compact system design with low ohmic resistance.
Programme Outcomes
VSRP interns leave with a strong grasp of their research field, equipped with practical skills valuable in further studies or any career. Many participants of this Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Water Electrolyzers for Green Hydrogen Production (Internship) project from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have presented their findings at conferences or published papers.
For those interested in research or academia, the exposure to leading faculty and cutting-edge research environments provides a strong stepping stone towards pursuing a master’s or Ph.D. at KAUST or other globally ranked universities.
