Overview
The Advanced Structural Engineering course at Nottingham Trent University covers advanced aspects of the design of box beams for long-span bridges, steel-concrete composite beams and structural elements for bridges and buildings.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- understand the best practice requirements for fire resistance design of structures
- review case studies where movements caused severe cracking or failure
- understand the use of new concepts, construction techniques and materials.
Programme Structure
This course will include:- how to calculate stresses and determine tendon forces
- how to calculate the permissible depth of the cable zone and steel areas
- how to check the adequacy of the reinforcement arrangement
- how to estimate pre-stress losses due to friction, elastic shortening, shrinkage and creep
- box, I, T and U beams and hollow-core units.
- the principles and requirements for safety, serviceability and design of composite steel and concrete structures, steel decking and composite slab design
