Overview
Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials. A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

By the end of this Current Practices in Civil Engineering course at Nottingham Trent University, you’ll be able to:
- review engineering principles in condition assessment and structural health monitoring
- evaluate the design and installation approaches used for various sensing systems
- explain engineering principles applied across a wide range of applications
- appraise the design and construction processes
- adapt techniques and solutions to a wide range of applications
- evaluate (and endeavour to improve) health and safety issues
- explain and debate complex sustainability and environmental issues
- apply your knowledge of mathematics, science, IT, design, business context and engineering practice to novel and challenging situations
Programme Structure
This course will include:- BIM in terms of tools and impact upon practice
- theoretical fundamentals, problems and challenges which an engineer has to tackle when assessing and monitoring civil infrastructure
- advances in sensing technologies and data management tools
- a critical analysis of modularised construction
- structural forms such as skeleton and mass structures, reciprocal frames, domes, shells and tension structures
- geospatial engineering
- an evaluation of design management practices and the concept of waste
- the monitoring of civil infrastructure and sensing systems for structural health monitoring

- You should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.
- You will probably be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and coordinating projects.
- If you wish to receive credit, you should also have a 2:2 honours degree in a construction-related subject.
- Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and/or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
