This Introduction to Heritage and Conservation course at Nottingham Trent University will guide you through selecting and using appropriate heritage materials in the repair, care, maintenance and upgrading of heritage buildings and assets.

Overview

The Introduction to Heritage and Conservation course at Nottingham Trent University will introduce you to the legal framework in place in the UK to ensure that repairs are appropriate and proportionate, meeting the requirements of the local authority and Historic England.

You’ll look at how to apply retrofit technologies to meet the climate change challenged of the future without compromising the heritage aesthetic and character of our cities, towns and villages.

Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will:

  • understand the main legal and practical constraints controlling works on historic buildings
  • be able to make informed decisions for selecting the most appropriate advice on the sympathetic maintenance, repair, conversion, conservation and retrofitting
  • have designed and specified appropriate upgrades to vernacular property, including choices for retrofit and enhancing energy performance
  • be confident in identifying differences in heritage construction techniques and materials
  • be able to interact effectively with both the owners of heritage buildings and those involved in carrying out the work
  • be able to demonstrate a range of transferable skills that be will valuable in the workplace

  • identify, record and evaluate different architectural periods and styles within their social, economic and physical contexts
  • learn about the regulatory and legislative framework in the UK
  • develop an understanding of heritage construction techniques and materials
  • look at the sustainable reuse and adaptation of heritage buildings and assets
  • practise retrofitting for heritage buildings and assets
