Overview
Prepare yourself to play a vital role in protecting health services and communities during times of disruption. In an increasingly complex world, healthcare organisations must be ready to respond to emergencies and incidents such as severe weather, infectious disease outbreaks, major transport accidents and other significant events, while continuing to provide safe and effective care for patients.
This course introduces you to the principles and practice of Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) within healthcare. You will explore how NHS-funded services and wider healthcare organisations meet their responsibilities under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, and how emergency planning and business continuity support the delivery of essential services during periods of pressure.
Designed for students who are interested in developing a career in emergency planning or business continuity within healthcare, the course combines academic learning with current professional practice. Technical content is delivered by practising EPRR specialists from a wide range of healthcare organisations, ensuring that your learning reflects contemporary challenges, operational realities and current best practice.
You will have opportunities to apply your learning through participation in a healthcare exercise, helping you to develop practical skills and gain experience of realistic incident response scenarios. Teaching is delivered primarily online, supported by an on-campus workshop and assessed activities that provide valuable in-person learning and professional development opportunities.
In the first year, students undertaking the CPD module are expected to attend an EPRR exercise for one working day and travel to the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus for a two-day workshop with assessment.
In the second year, students undertaking the PGCert module are expected to travel to the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus for one or two working days to complete an assessed presentation.
