Overview
This Vibro and Aero Acoustics module at the University of Salford is ideal if you are aiming to work in automotive, aerospace, environmental acoustics, or noise control engineering, this module combines theoretical knowledge with industry-relevant skills and practices.
What you will study
In the vibro-acoustics part, you will learn state-of-the-art ‘component-based’ approaches to the analysis, simulation, virtual prototyping and ‘digital twinning’ of machines and mechanical systems. Notably, this will include the in-situ blocked force method, through which many of the developments in the component-based approach have been based.
In the aero-acoustics part, you will explore propulsion and airframe noise mechanisms, sound propagation, and the impact of atmospheric conditions, focusing on the physical principles of aeroacoustics and the key noise sources in modern aircraft.
Programme Structure
You will:- Develop an understanding of discrete multi-DoF systems, including their steady state and transient solutions through direct and modal representations
- Explore component-based vibroacoustic analysis techniques, centering on the in-situ blocked force method
- Study acoustics and aeroacoustics, including wave propagation, sound levels, and the influence of aerodynamic flow and solid boundaries on sound generation
- Investigate the physical mechanisms and sources of flow noise in aircraft systems, covering both propulsion-related (e.g., jet, turbomachinery, propeller, and combustion noise) and airframe-related (e.g., landing gear, cavity noise) contributors
