About

Dementia, Space and Place at University of Stirling explores the role of design and the environment in supporting and caring for people living with dementia.

Overview

Dementia, Space and Place at University of Stirling students are supported to critically explore environmental issues and consider their implications for dementia care practice. The module has been created in response to a rapidly growing interest in the social and physical environments inhabited by people living with dementia. Importantly, research shows that the environment can both undermine and constrain, but equally can enable and support the person with dementia.

The environment can and does play an active role in supporting people to live well with dementia and in the efforts of practitioners to achieve their therapeutic goals in working with the person with dementia. This module will explore the relationship between dementia care and the diverse places and spaces in which it is provided, from hospitals and care homes to domestic settings and outdoor and public spaces.

The module aims and objectives are:

  • to examine and explore different theories and perspectives on dementia, ageing, place and space
  • to examine the evidence base on dementia and the environment and its implications for policy and practice
  • to critically reflect on your own practice in light of the knowledge and insights gained through this module
  • to gain direct experience in environmental auditing and other place-based skills to enhance dementia practice
