Overview
Tourism is developing rapidly, and travellers are becoming increasingly demanding, not only in terms of service quality, but also with regard to innovative ways of experiencing and engaging with destinations. Experiential tourism, in particular, is a growing trend that every tourism professional should be aware of.
The development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), computer-based systems in general and Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers new opportunities for the dissemination and transmission of knowledge. The integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Artificial Intelligence, known as GeoAI – that combines the spatial analysis capabilities of GIS with AI’s ability to process large volumes of data – the continuous and increasingly accessible availability of satellite imagery, specialized software capable of supporting the analysis of historical cartography, surveying and 3D modelling methods, integrated with advanced geometric scanning technologies and the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as the development of virtual tours, have profoundly transformed the ways in which cities and territories are interpreted, narrated and represented.
The methods and approaches of the humanities also make it possible to harness the potential of new technologies to create innovative products capable of offering new ways of looking at, understanding, experiencing, and engaging with territories and their history.
Students interested in obtaining the 6 ECTS will be required, upon completion of the taught component of the programme, to produce a digital project using the tools explored during the course. Examples of such projects include a thematic digital guide, a thematic map featuring tourist itineraries, virtual tours, or similar digital outputs demonstrating the participant’s ability to present and interpret one or more archaeological sites or cultural heritage assets for a broad and diverse audience, placing them within their historical, landscape, and/or urban context. The project must be submitted within one month of the end of the classroom-based teaching activities, that is, by 16 July 2027.
The Summer School will be activated with at least 12 students. The maximum number of participants is set to 50 students.
The Summer School will be held on campus, in Monte San Quirico (LU), Via del seminario, 790.
Programme Structure
The aim of the Summer School is to train professionals capable of documenting, enhancing and promoting landscape and cultural heritage through an in-depth study of cities and territories, also by making use of digital technologies.
To this end, the course aims to develop the key skills required to design and create multimedia urban and territorial guides for tourism, increasingly focused on the experiential dimension of visitors and their engagement with destinations.
The proposed training programme has a strong professional and practical focus, combining theoretical knowledge with applied examples and case studies.
