About

History

After getting the go-ahead to build in 1960, the Earlham golf course on the outskirts of Norwich was chosen as the site of the permanent campus and work began in 1961.The university was originally based in the present-day University Village - with teaching space for about 1200 students - and admitted its first cohort of 87 students in 1963.

Education

Here at the UEA we offer over 450 undergraduate and postgraduate courses for you to choose from plus an inspiring range of PHDs and studenships to explore.

You will be able to take control of your learning in a variety of ways at UEA as many of our courses include hands-on classes or modules where you get to put what you’ve learnt in lectures into practice on projects or even in real-world research. You can even look to study abroad and explore your horizons even more.

Research

Focused around six themes our research spans the global challenges that we face: from meeting the needs of an ageing population to understanding the unique and fragile environments we live in, to tackling energy, food and water security so we can make the best use of our planet’s resources.

The research stories behind our themes showcase the ways in which we are seeking to address and answer the demands of our society as well as how we are informing, changing and adapting to them.

Services

Student services

Student Support Advisers in the Student Support Centre offer a confidential and non-judgemental service where you are free to discuss anything that is impacting on your ability to be the most successful student you can be. We work closely and liaise with other services in the Student Support Service such as the Wellbeing Advisers (Mental Health), Counsellors, Wellbeing Advisers (Disability), Finance and Learning Enhancement Teams. We also liaise with other University departments including the Learning and Teaching Service (LTS).

Housing services

We are proud to offer a range of different types of accommodation for students. We strongly recommend that you attend one of our Applicant Days during which you will be able to visit our accommodation blocks and look at some of our rooms.

The Architects' Journal has voted our original residences – the Ziggurats – in the top ten best examples of university architecture in the country. We offer over 4,300 fully furnished rooms in spacious on-site buildings that sit in 200 hectares of natural landscape.

Library services

Most of our physical collections are available open access on our main shelves spread over the 5 reading floors of the Library.

ICT services

The Wi-Fi network at the UEA is called eduroam (education roaming). eduroam is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

When you begin studying or working at the UEA an IT account will be created for you.

Medical services

In the UK you will use the NHS (National Healthcare Service) for medical treatment. Even if you have paid the Immigration Healtcare Surcharge (IHS), you will still need to pay for some services such as prescription medications, dental treatment, eye exams, and possible preconditions you have. To access the NHS you need to register with a General Practitioner (GP) doctor.

Student Life

Campus life

UEA's campus is like a mini city – it's big enough to find your niche but small enough to call home. Set in 20 hectares of beautiful parkland with amazing on-campus facilities like the Ziggurats, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and a great students' union, UEA is a fantastic campus university.

Sports facilities

We're incredibly proud of the Sportspark, one of the biggest sports facilities at a UK university. And being one of the biggest means you get to pick from a whole array of activities so you can perfect your practice or try something new. Here's just some of the sports on offer:

  • Over 60 exercise classes
  • Floodlit pitches
  • Athletics track
  • Climbing wall
  • 125-station state of the art fitness centre and gym
  • Qualified PTs
  • Supporting services like the Diet MOT and Sports Massage Therapy

Student clubs

University is all about trying new things and meeting new people. With 200 active clubs and societies, you can share your interests, develop new skills and make new friends. Whether you’re into tennis, being a TV presenter or drinking tea (yes, there’s a club for that!) you’re sure to find a club that suits you.
