Excelling in subject areas such as automation and control, mining and mineral engineering, nursing, architecture and education, offering a total of 12 subjects ranked inside the world’s top 200 (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022).  

The university is a leading contributor to research both in the world and in Australia. Its researchers benefit from its world-class facilities and flagship research institutes consisting of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), and more than 15 Priority Research Centres.

Student services

Academic skills are essential for success at university, but many students need help to develop these skills.

Academic Learning Support can help you with skills such as planning your study, reading and notetaking for assignments, or academic writing.

We also help students to improve their maths and stats skills.

You can get expert advice from a Learning Advisor, study with other students in PASS, or get help any time with your assignments from Studiosity.

Housing services

Student Living offers nine residences - eight at the Newcastle (Callaghan) campus and one at the Central Coast (Ourimbah) campus. You will join 1,800 students from around the globe in secure, affordable, and comfortable on-campus accommodation. Choose from self-contained apartments to dormitory style rooms, all with shared facilities like common rooms, cinema rooms and swimming pools, which bring our community together.

City Campus Student Accommodation - Currently under construction, the new City Campus Student Accommodation (Newcastle) will offer a variety of room types including micro studios, studios, twin apartments, and larger shared apartments. The building will be operational by the end of 2026.

Library services

Our Library is the heart of the University—a vibrant space where people gather, learn and most importantly, come together as a community. You can support the Library by leaving a gift in your will, donating to the Vera Deacon Regional History Fund, by making a unique gift, or speak to us about bespoke options.

ICT services

Students at all campuses – including if you are studying remotely – can connect with the University’s suite of computer accounts, and have free access to cutting-edge software and cloud storage. If you’re on-campus, there are thousands of computers and devices available for your use, as well as wireless and wired networks.

Medical services

The health and safety of students, whether on campus or undertaking study related activities off campus, is extremely important at the University of Newcastle: To help the University manage and respond to health and safety incidents and issues, it is essential all injuries, illnesses, hazards and near misses are reported as soon as possible.
