From the very start of the study programme, we work whenever possible with real life assignments where you will have direct contact with the professional field. In this way, you will encounter ‘21st century skills’, such as being entrepreneurial. You will also experience what it's like to be working in a team where everybody has a different set of skills and knowledge. Just like in real life. At VHL you don’t just sit in a classroom and listen to your lecturer. You are encouraged to have discussions with your fellow classmates and the lecturer to come up with a good solution to a real problem. These are skills that employers really value.
We conduct high-quality practice-based research which enhances both our teaching and our position as a research institute. Our applied research groups contribute to sustainable and innovative developments through research and knowledge valorisation.
Research questions originating from the professional field are explored under the supervision of professors. With some 20 applied research groups, we have the focus and mass to deliver the right knowledge from different disciplines for applied sustainable innovations in the field of conservation and sustainable land and water use, biodiversity, food security and the transition to a biobased, circular economy.
Van Hall Larenstein has close connections to the international business world and NGO’s. This allows you to apply the theory into practice: besides obtaining highly valued work experience during internships abroad, students go on excursions at companies where they work on real life cases and we invite professionals over to give guest lectures. We strongly believe that international experience is crucial in the development of our students as intercultural competences are required in almost all career fields. Right from the start you will develop a professional network of students and colleagues from all over the world.
Study counselling is intended to enable you to study successfully and independently. In one-on-one meetings, a student counsellor will offer you information, advice, guidance or a second opinion on subjects related to your studies, your academic career or personal issues.
The counsellor will assist you in analysing study problems, outlining the options available and helping you develop a good mindset and approach to studying. The counsellor can also help you if there are special circumstances that cause you to (potentially) be delayed in your studies and/or get into financial difficulties, in the event of illness, a disability or other personal circumstances that require the adaptation of the education.
Many private housing agencies offer affordable student housing in the city centres of our locations. They offer a range of different furnished or unfurnished rooms. Please start your search in time: by August rooms are short and prices are up. In most student houses you will have your own room and share the bathroom and kitchen with your housemates. On our website we share links to housing agencies and student Facebook pages to help you find accommodation. We also have a housing coordinator that can help you with questions.
The libraries are high-quality departments within Van Hall Larenstein. They are intensively used as places where users can meet, study, lounge and hold a meeting. The media collection is suited to the needs of the various study programmes at each campus location.
Van Hall Larenstein has 2 locations in The Netherlands. In Velp we are located on the Larenstein Estate: a modern building surrounded by luscious greenery. It only takes a few minutes by bike to get to the vibrant city centre of Arnhem. We have second location in Leeuwarden, European capital of culture in 2018. It has canals flowing through the city and it's closely located to the Dutch islands.
Both Leeuwarden and Arnhem are medium sized student cities with loads of international students. Throughout the year there are several free festivals, markets and concerts where you can hang out with your friends and meet the locals. Amsterdam, The Hague, Berlin and Paris are only a short train journey away.
Exercising can be a nice outlet during your studies, and a good time to relax. As a student of Van Hall Larenstein, you can take advantage of discounted sport opportunities. Thanks to the student sports card, you can choose from a huge selection: from fitness, squash and swimming to group classes.
Of course, you can organise your new life as a student all by yourself. But you can also choose to become a member of a student association and experience your student life in the best possible way. Both options are equally fine, but it is nice to be able to choose. And this is possible! There are several student associations active in Velp (Arnhem) and Leeuwarden. Some are especially for international students. At VHL most study programmes also have their own student association. In addition, there is an international association in Velp, created for all students from the English-taught programmes to connect, share, network, exchange, collaborate and communicate.
All programmes of Van Hall Larenstein are accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (in Dutch: NVAO). Every six years each programme has to renew this inspection mark. In order to accomplish this, a visitation-panel will assess the programme and produce a visitation report. Every cluster of programmes is visited in a different year.
