Schola Empirica

SCHOLA EMPIRICA is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization and educational institution accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education. Established in 2003 to support independent applied social research in the Czech Republic, it soon became an important platform for local and international experts in a wide spectrum of applied social sciences.

About

SCHOLA EMPIRICA is active in research on the current social issues, definition and transfer of the best practices in policy design and implementation to the Czech environment.

Prague Summer Schools (PSS) aim to contribute to international dialog on the important social and economic issues thereby bringing a large group of international students to Prague to spend one week in challenging and intensive educational environment.

Besides the international Summer Schools, the main activities of the organization are also focused on the preparation and implementation of various educational projects related to social integration of children and youth.

SCHOLA can host one to two interns at a time. Interns support the team of SCHOLA with background research and administrative tasks. Interns must have strong analytical skills and profound interest in a particular area of policy research. As a part of their internship Interns have an oportunity to be a part of the Summer Schools organized by SCHOLA.

There is also reliable night tram service. Students will be provided with a one-week travel pass. This pass entitles for unlimited travel on the Prague's public transportation system, including night tram service.Public Transport of the Capital City - Prague website.AccommodationStudents will be staying in double occupancy rooms at the Hotel located at venue of the PSS 2015 or Hotel Ametyst, ten minutes from the Prague city centre. The Hotel is situated in Vinohrady, a beautiful part of Prague, next to the historical heart of the city. Students will have an easy access to the Old Town by inexpensive metropolitan transport system (bus, tram or metro) or by taxi. Each suit of two rooms is equipped with a private shower, WC, satellite TV, internet connection and telephone.Computer FacilitiesSeveral computers with internet connections will be available to students at the PSS 2015 venue. In addition, there are many internet cafes around town, including free internet access at the Globe Café (free hook-up for laptops as well).MealsMeals will include breakfasts and dinners served at the hotel restaurant. Students will be responsible for their own lunches and can choose from many options. There are numerous McDonalds, KFCs, and other fast food restaurants here, as well as other international cuisines. But we recommend you to try traditional Czech food, which is delicious and reasonably priced (an average lunch meal with main dish, side dish, drink, and tip costs around 5 EUR). A variety of dining options surround the Institute’s venue and there is a number of excellent restaurants in the city. There are also grocery stores located nearby the hotel.

Student Life

As a PSS 2015 participant, you will also be granted exclusive opportunities to attend unique events around the city of Prague. A tour of Prague with experienced guides will take students around the main historical and architectural attractions of the city. This three hour walking tour offers the first exposure to the city and provides an insight on what Prague has to offer.

A concert at the famous Rudolfinum Hall will host students for an evening of classical music. This neo-renaissance seat of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra is situated in the center of Prague. The facade is an analogy of the fire that destroyed Semper Opera in Dresden (1838-41). The building was finished in the year 1881 and the sculptures in the attic gable were installed in 1884. The concert hall has excellent acoustics, appropriate for oratorios and symphonic and chamber music, and an exceptionally high-quality organ.

Students will have time to socialize and interact with one another. Participants should look forward to special dinners and gatherings. These special events include a traditional Czech pub dinner, a boat tour on Vltava River, “Happy Hour,” and a farewell dinner. These social events will enable students to get to know each other better, start new friendships and enjoy their week in Prague to its fullest potential.

Accreditation

In August, 2009 the SCHOLA EMPIRICA was accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports as an educational institution to provide training and issue certificates for the accredited courses within the project for pedagogical personell focused on the transfer of good practices of youth crime prevention in schools. Accreditation Nr. 15 816/2009-2.

In 2008 SCHOLA EMPIRICA was accredited as an educational institution by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.
