Carnegie Mellon University

A self-educated "working boy" who loved books, Andrew Carnegie emigrated from Scotland in 1848 and settled in Pittsburgh, Pa. Attending night school and borrowing books, Carnegie went from factory worker in a textile mill to successful entrepreneur and industrialist. He rose to prominence by founding what became the world's largest steel producing company by the end of the 19th century.

One of the university's missions is to create a transformative educational experience for students focused on deep disciplinary knowledge; problem solving; leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; and personal health and well-being.

  • A research university like no other, Carnegie Mellon is home to experts who lead their fields and create new ones.
  • From computing to the arts to the environment to biotechnology, CMU students, faculty and staff are shaping the future with a strong focus on finding practical answers to complex problems.
  • Home to more than 100 centers and institutes, CMU affords its researchers the freedom to look across disciplines for solutions, benefiting from many perspectives.

The Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a centralized career center staffed by a team of 24 enthusiastic, dedicated, and highly-educated professionals who orchestrate the career exploration, experiential learning, and career networking needs of students and alumni.

Housing services

  • Carnegie Mellon’s housing communities provide students with opportunities to enhance their personal growth and development as they progress through their college years. Each community - whether first-year, upperclass, or Greek - has its own distinctive character, traditions, and design but all share core focus areas: transition, support, involvement, personal development.
  • The house model is designed to promote abundant and meaningful interaction among community members. As such, students are encouraged to take an active role within their residential communities and are strong partners in building safe, positive communities where each person may share with others his or her unique strengths and talents.

Campus life

At its Silicon Valley location, CMU's College of Engineering can integrate the rich heritage and resources of the Pittsburgh campus with the opportunities available in the dynamic Silicon Valley business environment. For more than a decade, we've worked with partners in the San Francisco Bay Area to establish a natural extension for the university's acclaimed graduate degree programs, innovative research, and support for entrepreneurs.

Sports facilities

The Carnegie Mellon University campus community has a central gathering place in the Jared L. Cohon University Center. The Cohon Center contains numerous facilities for athletics, assemblies and dining as well as lounge and retail areas. It also includes space for student organizations and activities. Student clubs

We are pleased to launch the new Office of Student Leadership, Involvement, and Civic Engagement, which we fondly refer to as SLICE. The creation of this new department brings together three teams, Student Activities, Greek Life, and Civic Engagement, in an effort to create a more holistic metacurricular experience for our undergraduate and graduate students.
