History

Founded in 1787, the University of Pittsburgh, originally named the Pittsburgh Academy, begins life in a log cabin on the American frontier. In petitioning Pennsylvania’s state assembly to charter an academy of learning in Pittsburgh, founding principal Hugh Henry Brackenridge writes, “We all know that the strength of a state greatly consists in the superior mental powers of the inhabitants.”

Research

Library services

Pitt’s University Library System (ULS) is the 22nd-largest academic library system in North America. It includes 15 libraries and collections and holds more than 6.4 million volumes and specialized collections including the Archive of Scientific Philosophy and the Archives of Industrial Society, as well as major foreign-language materials from around the world totaling 1.4 million volumes.

ICT services

More than 160 software packages are available to students at little or no cost. Most software can be downloaded at no cost from the Software Download Service at My Pitt including Microsoft Office. Some software is available for purchase at discounted prices at the Technology Services Desk at the University Store on Fifth.
