University of Minnesota

History

The University of Minnesota traces its origins to 1851, seven years before Minnesota became a state. Nearly 170 years later the U of M has grown to become one of the preeminent public research universities in the nation.

Education

We prepare students to meet the great challenges facing our state, our nation, and our world. As a U of M student you'll engage with your professors and fellow students from the very beginning. And you'll develop your strengths with beyond-the-classroom experiences.

Research

We seek new knowledge that can change how we all work and live. At the University of Minnesota, students do research alongside top professors in all majors.

Student services

The Office of Student Finance (OSF) manages the entire lifecycle of student finances for all University of Minnesota students. OSF calculates financial aid eligibility and manages the awarding, origination, and disbursement of financial aid as well as billing, accounts receivable, student loan entrance and exit interviews, and loan and account collections.

Housing services

Ninety percent of first-year University of Minnesota students live on campus. You'll meet new people and develop long-lasting friendships while being near classes, the student union, libraries, and recreation centers. Housing options range from residence halls to groups of students with similar academic or cultural interests living together in tight-knit Living Learning Communities.

Library services

The University of Minnesota Libraries are open to the public. With millions of titles available in our general collections and treasures held by our archives and special collections, we are among the University’s and the state’s greatest intellectual assets.

Medical services

Through University of Minnesota Health, you have access to breakthrough health care at hospitals and clinics throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota.

Campus life

The safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors is incredibly important to all of us at the University of Minnesota, and the Twin Cities campus is among the safest in the country. Students can receive real-time safety alerts via text message by signing up for Safe-U, and alarm buttons and emergency phones are located throughout campus. Parking facilities, skyways, and tunnels are monitored 24 hours a day with the aid of security cameras, and campus escorts are available to bike and walk with you to and from campus locations and nearby neighborhoods.

Sports facilities

From certifiable classic to state-of-the-art, the U of M is bursting with iconic sports facilities. We have the venerable Williams Arena (aka “The Barn”)—with its unique raised floor—which has seen a century’s worth of hardcourt history. There’s the world-class University Aquatic Center, which has hosted numerous championship events. And our puck fans light up when they walk into Mariucci and Ridder Arenas, the envy of hockey fans everywhere.

Student clubs

Our students come together to socialize and learn from each other in more than 800 student groups, from the Alpine Ski Team and the Black Student Union, to the Bass Fishing Team and the Capoeira Club. We also have an active Fraternity and Sorority community.
