The Michigan Almanac provides a consolidated source of data and commentary covering major activities of the U-M Ann Arbor campus. This document includes sections on student admissions and enrollment, costs of attendance, student achievement, faculty and staff statistics, diversity indicators for all parts of the campus community, teaching and learning activities, research and technology transfer, budget, development, space, sustainability, and academic rankings. The Almanac is a factbook covering information and data for many purposes and audiences.

Short Courses



  • 1817: The University of Michigan is founded as one of the first public universities in the nation.
  • 1837: The University moves its campus from Detroit to Ann Arbor.
  • 1848: The Board of Regents establishes a three-member medical department, known today as the University of Michigan Medical School.
  • 1852: Ninety young physicians receive medical diplomas from U-M.

Student services

Housing services

Nearly 98% of first-year students live on campus in one of U-M’s residential communities. Social and academic support is available through live-in staff or resident assistants who will be there to help you through any number of personal, intellectual, social, and life issues, and decisions.

Library services

  • After a $55 million renovation, the 35-year-old Taubman Health Sciences Library building on the U-M medical campus has emerged as a new kind of facility. The 143,000-square-foot, all-digital, light-filled, dynamic learning space was designed for future physicians, scientists, and other health professionals.

  • U-M students from all campuses, including those who not currently taking classes or are between terms (see Eligibility for Specialty Services below)

  • There are more than 200 student arts-related organizations on campus relating to Creative & Performing Arts and Media & Creative Writing.
