The university was established in 1994 and opened in 1996, as the Sunshine Coast University College.The university changed to its current name of the University of the Sunshine Coast in 1999. The University of the Sunshine Coast is the first greenfields university established in Australia since 1971.

USC undertakes research of international, national and local significance.

Our areas of research focus include medical and health science, sustainability and the environment, animal and marine ecology, aquaculture and agriculture, forestry research, accident research, and creative humanities.

USC has been rated by the Australian Research Council as having 14 research fields at or above world standard, including the equal highest rating nationally in nursing, zoology, and environmental science and management.

USC’s national and international research impact is growing fast, with annual research income more than tripling in five years to reach $24 million.

Student services

Student Services and Engagement delivers a quality service by ensuring its systems, processes and procedures meet the needs of students and staff across the University.

Staff within Student Services and Engagement provide student focused advice and support and aim for excellence in service delivery across all administrative aspects of a student’s engagement with the University.

Housing services

Three privately–owned, fully–furnished student accommodation complexes are conveniently located next to the University. UniCentral, Varsity Apartments and The Village are all linked by pathway to the campus, which is an easy three–minute walk away.

Library services

The mission of the University of the Sunshine Coast Library is to provide quality services and collections that support the teaching, research and scholarship activities of the University.

Medical services

The University of the Sunshine Coast is committed to operating under the World Health Organisation Health Promoting Universities framework, which is based on the principles of the Ottawa Charter for health promotion.

Student Life

Campus life

The main University of the Sunshine Coast campus is at Sippy Downs, Queensland. The university also has teaching facilities in Noosa, and operates an education and research facility at Dilli Village on Fraser Island. The Sippy Downs campus is about 100 kilometres (62 mi) north of Brisbane. It is a 100-hectare flora and fauna reserve, and borders the Mooloolah River National Park.
