History

UTS began as the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT), established in 1964.

Following the merger of the The School of Design (Sydney College of the Arts) and NSWIT in 1988, the University of Technology Sydney was officially formed.

By 1991, UTS had nine faculties with a total of 25 schools.

UTS is Australia's number #1 young university and ranks in the top 100 universities in the world.

Student services

The UTS International Student Centre can help you apply to UTS. 

If you are thinking about applying (or have already submitted an application) to UTS, we provide general admission advice for both international undergraduate and postgraduate coursework study. Prospective research applicants are advised to contact the Graduate Research School.

Housing services

UTS Housing offers comfortable, affordable and convenient living options. You can choose from a range of fully-furnished and self-catered accommodation options. Become part of a diverse and vibrant community that supports and motivates you during your time at UTS. 

Library services

The UTS library opened its doors in 2019, after relocating to the newly-built UTS Central building. With 450,000 items in its collection, the UTS Library is sure to provoke your next breakthrough.

The centerpiece of the library is the Reading Room, a cavernous space with a triple-height atrium and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The library also contains discussion spaces and 300 computers. 

ICT services

UTS has over 9000 computers. They are located across the campus in a variety of labs made for independent study, group study, workshops and research. UTS also provides access to over 30 printers for general use.

Medical services

UTS provides confidential medical and counselling services for onshore international students. These services are provided on the UTS campus; additionally, medical consultation may be conducted over phone or video call.

Campus life

Over the last decade, we have transformed into a campus of the future, constructing iconic and sustainable buildings including the UTS Business School, designed by Frank Gehry. Our interconnected spaces support practical learning, collaboration and research across all faculties. 

Sports facilities

The UTS gym is a great place to work off the stresses of studying. The gym has state-of-the-art cardio, strength, conditioning and Olympic weightlifting equipment alongside expert staff and personal trainers to help you reach your goals.

With over 30 sport clubs, UTS Sport caters to elite athletes and casual players alike. Represent UTS on the national stage or start your own club. 

Student clubs

UTS has over 180 UTS clubs and societies where you can meet like-minded students and connect over dance, design, dogs or anything else that interests you.

Other ways to meet people:

  • Network Café – a casual, weekly meet-up at one of UTS's cafes where international and local students can meet and hang out.
  • Researchers’ Café – a space for higher degree research students to network and learn about exciting developments across faculties. 
  • Conversations@UTS – a relaxed environment to practice your English conversation skills and meet other international students.
  • UTS SOUL – a program for passionate students to give back to the community by volunteering.
