History
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County was born amid the turbulent swirl of the 1960s, and we had to cut our own path in a field of older, established institutions.
Education
UMBC offers 55 majors and 35 minors, as well as 24 certificate programs, spanning the arts, engineering and information technology, humanities, sciences, pre-professional studies and social sciences. UMBC’s Graduate School offers 41 master’s degree programs, 24 doctoral degree programs and 24 graduate certificate programs. Programs are offered in education, engineering, emergency health services, imaging and digital arts, information technology, aging services, life sciences, psychology, public policy, and a host of other fields.
Research
From modest beginnings, with some of our initial external research awards secured in the mid 1990’s, we have grown into a Doctoral University with Higher Research Activity, as designated by the current Carnegie Classification, which places us among the top 220 research universities in the Nation with FY 2016 research expenditures approaching $80 Million. According to the current NSF’s Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey, we are ranked #151 in federal research and development expenditures.
Career
The Career Center also serves UMBC alumni as they grow in their careers or transition to new ones, and we create partnerships with local and national employers to provide outstanding talent. We collaborate with UMBC faculty and staff to provide students for internships and other positions, in addition to career planning, job search, and professional/graduate school preparatory assistance for students.

○ The Center for Global Engagement (CGE) is dedicated to supporting and facilitating global academic initiatives by advancing the international exchange of students, scholars and faculty and by providing leadership in intercultural learning through study abroad.
Housing services
Residential Life provides facilities, services, and programs that support the academic mission of the institution and enhance the quality of life for students that live on campus. Residential Life staff encourages the personal, social, academic, and leadership development of resident students and prepare them to be active and responsible citizens within the UMBC community and beyond.
Library services
Did you know that the Library loans laptops and a variety of audio and video equipment? Laptops are available at the Check Out Desk. For everything else, head up to the Digital Media Lab (DML) on the 2nd floor - all equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
ICT services
The Division of Information Technology has approximately 80 full time staff members and over 100 UMBC students that work each day to support the mission of UMBC through the delivery of IT services to the campus.
Medical services
UMBC is committed to providing students with the resources they need to have a healthy, well-balanced, and successful UMBC experience. College isn’t just about test scores and accolades; it’s also about personal discovery and growth. To support students on their journeys, UMBC provides a range of resources for physical, mental, and emotional health and wellbeing.
Campus life
The Commons is UMBC’s one-stop student center, featuring a food court, restaurant, full-service bank, bookstore, performance spaces and game room. High-speed wireless technology makes it easy to plug in to the campus network and the Internet.
Sports facilities
UMBC features 17 Division I men’s and women’s sports, and our scholar-athletes are known for combining their passion for athletics with their commitment to education. UMBC teams have earned several America East championship titles in recent years, including in swimming/diving, basketball, and soccer.
