The history of Tongji can be traced back to 1907, when the German Medical School was founded by Erich Paulun, a German doctor, and was then renamed as Tongji German Medical School in the following year. The School was expanded later to include engineering in its programs and got its new name of Tongji German Medical and Engineering School in 1912.
Among over 300,000 graduates of the University since its founding, many are extraordinary political leaders, scientists, educators, social activists, business leaders, medical specialists, and engineering experts. Over 150 alumni are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In light of the general target of the university’s discipline development, the scientific researches are progressing quickly. Remarkable improvements have been made to the overall conditions of research and the university’s research ability is much strengthened. In 2011 the university’s total fund for research is 1.89 billion CNY.
The university housed 29 provincial and ministerial research bases, among which six are of national level.
Tongji University has been recruiting international students since 1954. It is one of the first universities in Shanghai that offers programs to international students. The International Student Office is responsible for international student recruitment, teaching arrangements and student care. It also provides the teaching of Chinese, including a 4-year BA degree program in Chinese.
Two on-campus International Students Buildings are used for student accommodation. There are 307 standard rooms and 34 suites available to students. To facilitate student life, an International Student Cafeteria has been established in one of the buildings.
