History

Kent's Paris School of Arts and Culture opened in Montparnasse in 2009 and has gone from strength to strength. With a long history as the European Capital of Culture, from Roman times to the present, Paris has seen a number of political regimes rise and fall. Discovering the impact the city has had on its citizens, and vice-versa, is all part of the pleasure of studying in Paris.

Education

The University of Kent's Paris School of Arts and Culture offers a unique selection of innovative and cross-disciplinary postgraduate degrees in the Humanities. Students can choose to spend the entire academic year at our Paris centre or, begin their one-year MA in the world heritage city of Canterbury and relocate in the spring term to the Montparnasse district of Paris.

Our programmes offer you the exceptional opportunity to study film, art, creative writing, literature and history, following in the footsteps of eminent intellectuals who lived in, and took inspiration from, these cities.

Research

Staff teaching in Paris are also active researchers in their specialist disciplines and their academic schools are among the UK leaders for Research Power, Quality and Intensity (REF 2021).

Career

Our graduates enjoy a high success rate in pursuing their chosen careers after graduation. Helped by the experience of studying in another country and working closely with leading academic staff, our recent graduates have gone on to work in areas including arts management, teaching and education administration; have obtained posts as editors and film producers; or continued their studies moving on to a PhD.

During your studies you can choose to undertake one internship as an integral part of your academic programme of study.  Former students secured internships at the British Council (France), UNESCO, an arts advertising agency, publishing houses, an architectural firm, and the European Commission in Brussels.

Student services

Moving to another country is an exciting but potentially daunting experience. At the Paris School of Arts and Culture, the majority of our students come from outside France, so we are very familiar with the preparations needed to relocate for postgraduate study. We can offer advice on key practical issues such as visas, accommodation and transport to make the process as smooth as possible.

Housing services

All our students are responsible for organising their own accommodation whilst in Paris, although the University of Kent, Paris team will help students in their search by giving advice, providing contacts to known landlords or property sites, making phone calls in French and helping students to read through French documents if necessary.

Library services

We have excellent online library resources via the University's library, inter-library loan, and e-book access. As Paris School of Arts and Culture students, you become members of the American Library in Paris and France’s premier research library, the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The University also organises your membership of specialist libraries and archives related to your subject.

ICT services

Study facilities at Reid Hall include computer workstations, free wi-fi access and full audiovisual equipment in classrooms. There is also a state-of the-art multimedia room for viewing films.

Medical services

Advice on healthcare in France,  disability and other student support and wellbeing is available from the University as well as staff in Paris.

Campus life

The School is based in Montparnasse next to the Latin quarter, a district teeming with student life, focused around the historic Sorbonne.

Reid Hall, where most of your seminars take place, provides modern study and support facilities in beautiful 18th-century buildings. Some seminars take place off-site in a location chosen to enhance the treatment of ideas and concepts.

Most modules also include an exciting range of study trips to various settings in Paris designed to further enhance your understanding of material covered.

Student clubs

One of the best things about Kent’s Paris School of Arts and Culture is the chance it gives you to work with other students from across the humanities. Each year, our students produce an arts and culture magazine and organise an MA festival, both from scratch.

Paris students are also part of the Graduate School which works in partnership with academic schools, faculties, central service departments and Kent Union to enhance the quality of the postgraduate student experience across all campuses and create a vibrant postgraduate community at Kent. There’s also the Postgraduate Network and the Mature Student Society who run all sorts of fun events and offers support to all postgraduate students.

  • In the QS World University Rankings 2024, Kent has been ranked 39th within the UK and is in the top 25% of Higher Education Institutions worldwide.
