MAI is one of the most popular universities in the field of aerospace training and in other high-tech industries. The University has its focus on the development of areas such as Aircraft, Space and Energy systems, IT, new materials and production technologies, the multifaceted use of aerospace and digital technologies.

History

Nikolai Zhukovsky initiated the foundation of scientific and educational centres to conduct the necessary research and training of scientists and engineers for the industry’s development.

Aeromechanical Department was founded at the mechanical faculty of MVTU (Moscow Higher Technical School). It was converted into Aeromechanical Faculty in 1929. 

Education

Educational process in MAI includes:

  • training combined with research programs with help of advanced equipment;
  • implementation of advanced educational methods, including the use of e-learning technologies, etc;
  • the use of everlasting design principle for all aircraft systems and space technology.

Students are engaged in research projects for Russian and foreign industries, which help students to see their prospects in these organizations. At the same time, employers estimate the abilities of their future professionals. MAI operates in accordance with the system of educational standards.

Research

MAI has the newest and unique equipment which allows it to conduct advanced researches. These are:

  • resource centers and research laboratories;
  • design bureaus, including ones for students;
  • mission control center;
  • experimental pilot plant;
  • airfield.

Career

Since the foundation of MAI, more than 175 000 professionals have graduated. More than 70% of MAI graduates work for industry-based corporations. MAI holds the record among universities in the number of graduates who have become space and test pilots. There are 23 pilot-cosmonauts who spent more than 15 years performing space missions. 65 spacewalks were carried out. Many MAI graduates are currently working as cosmonauts.

Student services

At Moscow Aviation Institute, the International Student Ambassadors are a vibrant team of student volunteers who represent and promote the University at various international events and activities on and off campus. Student ambassadors play a key role in our events - offering a students' point of view and sharing your opinions and experience about going to university.

Housing services

MAI campus includes 9 dormitory buildings with a total number of 7020 beds. The area of the dormitories is 79,541 sq. m. The dormitory buildings are equipped with laundry rooms, cooking facilities, bicycle storage rooms, etc. offering a comfort stay for students. 

Library services

MAI scientific and technical library provides students with an extensive range of educational, methodical, fiction literature, as well as publications in journals. The library has a unique collection of literature, amounting to more than 3 million copies of books. It received 26 500 copies of books last year. STL operates an electronic library of full-text (2973 editions).

ICT services

Wi-Fi internet access is free.

Medical services

It is located in the building of one of the dormitories (K. Tsaryova 12/ 3 Corps campus). Students can receive adequate medical care here. Accommodation in comfortable double or triple rooms under the supervision of medical staff is organized. Half board meals (lunch and dinner), physiotherapy, dentistry, psychotherapy, massages, EHF-therapy, ECG, physical therapy, inhalation, solarium, juice bar.

Campus life

The campus of the Moscow Aviation Institute (National Research University) is a unique city infrastructure. There are classrooms and buildings for educational purposes, scientific research centres, numerous laboratories and resource centres for advanced technologies, scientific and technical library, health centre, recreational and educational centres. MAI campus includes 9 dormitories.

Sports facilities

Each MAI student has an opportunity to join a sports clubs. There are about 50 clubs (listed below). In total there are about 2 000 people in the sports clubs. The University regularly holds inter-faculty sports days, sports competitions, relay races, etc.

There are more than 60 Olympic, World and Europe Champions among MAI athletes. MAI teams in rowing, basketball, volleyball, handball, rugby, hockey, tourism, as well as individual athletes have been repeatedly becoming Champions of the USSR and Russia, winners of international, Russian and Moscow competitions.

The decision of the Accreditation Council was approved by the Board of the Association for Engineering Education of Russia (AEER)
